The term puppet usually brings up an association with kids because modern puppet theater is for the most part oriented on the kids auditory. This kind of theater comes from ancient times. It was mentioned in the works of ancient Greeks such as Aristotle and Plato, but the puppet art was not described in details. Puppet dolls were also applied in the form of tribal masks in different religious ceremonies long time ago. But today puppets constitute a symbol of joy and are used to entertain people, both children and adults. On the whole a puppet is an inanimate figure of a person or an animal. The figure is manipulated by puppeteer which allows to organize performances with puppets. Puppet art is quite developed at present time. There are various types of puppet dolls, the most popular among them are those mentioned below. Hand puppets, also known as glove puppets, are the most widespread form of puppets. Hand puppet dolls are composed of a head made of various materials, like wood, papier-mache or cardboard, and a body representing a rag glove that is put on the hand of puppeteer. When puppeteer moves fingers, the puppet doll becomes animated. Among varieties of hand puppets is finger puppets. As it is evident from the name such puppet dolls are put on fingers. They are very small and are often used as toys for kids. Another popular kind of puppet dolls is represented by marionettes. Marionette is a puppet doll with strings attached to different parts of its body. By means of pulling these strings puppeteer can manipulate the puppet doll and make it move. Marionettes are used both for entertainment and in professional puppet theater plays. There is one more amazing form of puppet dolls named shadow puppets. A shadow puppet is a flat figure located between a source of light and a translucent screen so as to produce shadow. Shadow theater was invented in Asia more than 1500 years ago. It used to enjoy great popularity in various parts of the world. These days shadow puppet theater is very popular in Indonesia.
